New York Congregational Nursing Center hosted health care professionals from the Brooklyn community during a ribbon cutting ceremony opening of the newly renovated Rehabilitation Suite and Stroke Specialty Program.
The suite features a full size kitchen, bedroom and bathroom for ADL training and a 900 square-foot gym, which includes the most modern rehabilitation equipment. “We decided to focus on stroke recovery because of the frequency of this diagnosis among our patients coming for Short Term Care,” said Celia Zuckerman, president of New York Congregational Entities.
The Stroke Specialty Program offers the latest technological rehabilitation equipment and provides the most effective treatment techniques available to patients who have been affected by strokes. The goal of the program is to maximize functional independence, decrease disability, promote recovery and prevent complications.
Family/caregivers are encouraged to be involved with recovery, support groups for patient and family are offered, and the importance of stroke prevention and healthy living. Emphasis is placed on:
• Preventing, recognizing and treating conditions and complications related to strokes.
• Identifying and reducing the risk factors for recurrent strokes.
• Focusing on functional independence and support.
• Coping and adapting to a stroke.
• Community integration and participation in life roles.
• Support systems and services for families.
The center provides short-term care for patients with complex medical needs who require rehabilitation before returning home, and long-term care for residents requiring skilled services who are unable to return home.
Services include occupational, physical and speech therapies. Conditions frequently treated include: fractures, joint replacements, arthritis, sports injuries, back rehabilitation, cognitive perceptual deficits, voice, swallowing and communication disorders.
New York Congregational Nursing Center is located at 135 Linden Boulevard in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn.
