Rockaway Pkwy speedway – Local residents fed up with out-of-control motorists

Speeding along Rockaway Parkway is causing problems for residents along the strip as well as endangering those who walk and drive there.

That’s the contention of one local resident, who demanded to know, at the most recent meeting of the 69th Precinct Community Council, “What can be done about speeding on Rockaway Parkway?”

The problem is “especially” severe in the vicinity of the Belt Parkway, claimed the resident during the group’s April meeting, which was held at the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club, 77 Conklin Avenue.

“Several of my neighbors have had their cars hit just trying to pull out of their driveway,” the resident went on, “and I’ve had some close calls. There’s a lot of people doing U-turns, cars going really fast. They’re trying to beat the lights. Late at night, it’s like they are drag-racing.”

The precinct keeps a close eye on accidents and identifies “accident-prone locations,” said Deputy Inspector Ralph Monteforte, the precinct’s commanding officer.
