A Williamsburg party seeks to turn the frown wrought by the current economic climate upside down by bringing the circus to town and sending in the clowns.
“And Everyone Laughed,” a theme party replete with clowns, flying trapeze artists, a strongman, and an eclectic mix of music and mixed−media art, will come to the ‘burg on June 13 at S.L.A.M. Warehouse (51 N. 1st Street).
It is the latest venture of BabyBunny, aka Misha Calvert, who brought the first ever Mr. and Miss Williamsburg contest to the neighborhood last September. Calvert parlayed the event’s success into a party featuring a “Re−Virginization” chamber, and recently hosted a tribute party to the Afro’d painter, Bob Ross.
The quotable Williamsburg resident said the circus is “the quintessential ‘everyone’s having a good time,’ metaphor,” perfect for shucking off the country’s somber mood in a night of “wholesome decadent enjoyment.”
Musical acts include Wolf + Lamb, Jakub Alexander, Worst Friends, Nicolas Jaar, Trus’me, Freetime, and Onno.
The resident dance company at S.L.A.M., which specializes in acrobatic, gravity defying dance, will also perform. They will make use of a 50−foot−high mouse wheel imported specially for the occasion.
Strongman Tim Dax, and Vicious Vaudeville, an escape artist, will bring a little bit of Coney Island to North Brooklyn. Collaboration Town, a Manhattan−based theater company, will help round out the event that Calvert, in a press release, described thusly:
“The event explores themes of fear, laughter, and love while slowly and steadily breaking down the fourth wall in a self−reflexive public performance akin to the ‘happenings’ of the 1960s.”
More comprehensively, she said, “There’s a message of hope in all of this. Even in these tough times, when the [proverbial] circus is in danger of closing, the spirit of the carnival must live on.”
Tickets for “And Everyone Laughed” cost $20. Half the proceeds will be donated to the Streb Dance School.
The party – which takes place at 51 N. 1st Street – starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 5 a.m.
