Salute to local ‘Rising Stars’

State Senator Kevin Parker announced the recipients — representing the best in Brooklyn’s education, and who stood out from hundreds of other student applicants — of the 2009 Rising Star community leaders award.

The finalists, chosen for their commitment to community service, leadership skills, and academic achievement, received a one-time award of $250, which can be used towards the students’ pursuit of higher education.

The award recipients were selected by a committee consisting of representatives from their schools along with staff members at Parker’s office. Applications were taken in May and final recommendations were sent to Parker by the committee.

This year’s winners were Max Charles, Tiana Walden, Shiniqua Baker, Marline Pamphile, Angelita Pierre-Noel, Diandra Anderson, Kino Quashie, and Jeffrey Mercedes.

Theschools earning Parker’s 2009 Rising Star Award were Midwood High School, 2839 Bedford Avenue; Erasmus STAR High School, 911 Flatbush Avenue; Samuel J. Tilden High School, 5800 Tilden Avenue; Nazareth Regional High School, 475 East 57th Street; and Brooklyn College Academy High School, 2900 Bedford Avenue, 1311 James Hall.
