The Cyclones were held to just four hits in a 2–1 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters.
Andrew Church was the tough luck loser, giving up two runs in six-and-one-third innings.
Vermont scored both runs in the second inning.
Nick Collins’ run-scoring double drove in Chris Iriart with the first run of the game. Collins scored on a Steven Pallares triple.
Vermont starter Bowdien Derby pitched three hitless innings before being replaced by Corey Miller.
The Cyclones broke through in the fifth, although they were done in by two outs on the bases.
Jeff Diehl reached on an error to begin the inning. After Brandon Brosher flew out, Hengelbert Rojas singled for the Cyclones first hit.
Jose Garcia’s single scored Diehl, but Rojas was thrown out trying to advance to third.
Garcia took second on the throw but was picked off to end the inning.
Brooklyn’s pitching kept the Cyclones in the game. Carlos Valdez retired both batters he faced and Ruben Reyes struck out the side in the eighth.
Vermont manager Aaron Nieckula turned to John Gorman to get the final six outs.
Rojas led off the eighth with a walk and was replaced by Enmanuel Zabala.
Zabala advanced to second on a ground out. With the potential tying run in scoring position, Alfredo Reyes and Tucker Tharp struck out to end the inning.
Vinny Siena led off the ninth with a single. After Michael Bernal flew out, Siena was caught stealing. David Thompson struck out swinging to end the game.
The 23–22 Cyclones are still only half-a-game behind the hated Staten Island Yankees for first place in a tightly contested McNamara Division. Hudson Valley is 22–23 and last-place Aberdeen is 21-24 after being no-hit on Thursday.
Brooklyn is back in action on Friday night at 7:05 pm against the Lake Monsters.
