Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz hosted the annual Back to School/Stay in School rally, organized by the Borough President’s Office, the Brooklyn Branch of the NAACP, and the New York City Department of Education.
At least 2,000 free backpacks, containing essential school supplies, will be distributed to the city’s neediest public school students, including those from foster homes, shelters and juvenile detention centers.
“As a product of the New York City public schools system, I know the great value of a solid education in preparing students to become our nation’s future leaders. After all — Brooklyn today is America tomorrow. I commend the NAACP and I am proud to once again support its Back to School/Stay in School Program, which provides valuable tools to help reduce educational disparities and ensure that all of our students reach the zenith of their God-given potential.”
Joining Markowitz at the event were Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, Congressman Ed Towns, NAACP New York State Conference President Hazel Dukes, and Brooklyn NAACP President Karen Boykin-Towns.
