When Brooklyn scout Giancarlo Rindone embarked upon his Eagle Scout project, he wanted to do something that would not only help his community, but be heartfelt and meaningful, too.
That’s when the Troop 99 member, whose brother is autistic, decided to create a special day of fun, hope and education for those living with autism. He enlisted the help of his family, friends and local elected officials, and after a lot of planning and work, he coordinated the ‘A Family Fun Day – Autism Awareness’ at St. Athanasius Church, 2154 61st Street.
Carnival-style rides and information tables set up by local agencies added to the festive community atmosphere being sought by the industrious teen, who says he learned early on in life to carry life’s demands with grace and humor.
“While autism sometimes affects our ability to do things typical families do so freely, it’s not what you do, what’s important is the amount of quality time you spend with your family,” said Giancarlo, adding that he hopes his eagle project makes a positive difference in someone’s life and affect positive change.
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and can be accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges.
