On Feb. 4, Brooklyn Center for the Performing
Arts brings DanceBrazil to Brooklyn College for the New York
premiere of "Retratos da Bahia," an evening-length
work inspired by French photographer and anthropologist Pierre
      Verger.
Verger’s book of the same title documented the culture of Bahia,
the northeastern state that’s home to the largest number of Brazilians
of African descent – as well as the troupe’s own dancers and
musicians. The score of "Retratos da Bahia" weaves
the Afro-Brazilian roots of traditional Bahian music, such as
      call-and-response songs, with pop music.
Tickets for DanceBrazil are $15-$35. "Retratos da Bahia"
will be performed on Feb. 4 at 8 pm at the Walt Whitman Theater,
located on the Brooklyn College campus (one block from the junction
of Flatbush and Nostrand avenues in Midwood). For tickets and
information, call (718) 951-4500 or visit the Web site at www.brooklyncenteronline.org.
