State Senator Martin J. Golden announced that the winner of the 2009 Senator for a Day Contest is eighth grader Alexandra Capellini of the Genesis at Xaverian High School.
This contest invited local school children to write essays no more than 250 words, which began with the phrase, “If I were a State Senator for A Day…” Throughout the essay, the students write about issues facing the community such as public safety, park improvements, educational improvements.
The winning essays were judged on content, creativity and presentation from almost 1,000 essays received from schools throughout District 20, 21 and 22.
Joel Garson, publisher of “Our News”; Tom Kane, of the Brooklyn Theater Arts Project and “The Brooklyn Eagle,” and Paula Katinas, reporter with the “Home Reporter” and the “Brooklyn Spectator,” served as the contest judges.
Capellini, discussed numerous issues in her essay which she would address as senator, such as increasing efforts to preserve New York’s Catholic schools, aiding in increasing enrollment, and an increase funding to support the school programs.
Capellini’s class will now be invited to Albany to see the legislative process in action and will be given a tour of the State Capitol.
