Park Slope’s Seventh Avenue post office won’t be shuttered — at least for now.
While rumors have persisted that the post office at 198 Seventh would be closed imminently, a postal official said that the station has several months to learn its fate.
“At this time, we are reviewing more than 3,000 stations and branches nationwide. No decisions will be made until the reviews are finalized, which will take months,” said Darleen Reid, a spokesperson from the United States Post Office.
Reid said no changes would be made until after the agency’s fiscal year ends, which is Sept 30.
“There will be a public notification for any office selected for closure or consolidation,” she said. “There are a lot of rumors floating around. There will be notifications to customers before anything happens.”
First class, single piece mail has declined to a level the Postal Service hasn’t seen since 1964, according to Reid.
In 2006 the agency had its highest volume year, with 213 billion pieces of mail being delivered. The numbers have declined every year since then, with the agency projecting 2009 to come in at around 170−180 billion pieces. “That’s quite a drop,” Reid said.
“We are looking at everything,” she continued. “We’ve got to match workload to work force.”
