Staten Island 8
Cyclones 7
July 1 at MCU Park
The hated Staten Island Yankees used a monster performance from Cyclone-killer Yeicok Calderon in an extra-innings comeback victory at MCU Park.
The Cyclones built an 4–0 lead by the third inning with RBIs by James “Papa” Roche, Matt “Bright Eyes” Oberste and Alex Sanchez, but the Yankees used a home run by Isaias Tejeda and a three-run double by Calderon in the fifth to tie the game.
Going into extra innings after what was supposed to be a shortened two-game doubleheader, Calderon continued to kill the Clones. He hit a home run in the 10th and a two-run single in the 11th. But the Cyclones wouldn’t quit, tying both innings up on an RBI single by Patrick “To Infinity and” Biondi and a two-run double by Roche off the center-field wall.
However, Yankees’ right-fielder Daniel Lopez hit another home run in the twelft12th to take the lead for good as the Cyclones’ shortstop (and pitcher in the 11th and 12th) Ismael Tijerina grounded into a double play to end the game.
The second game of the doubleheader was not played and will be rescheduled for a later date.
The Cyclones look to record the team’s first win against the Yankees tonight at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on the Rock.
