There were angels in the outfield!
Councilman Mark Treyger (D–Coney Island) teamed up with the Coney Island Autism Angels for a charity softball game at MCU Park on July 14 to help raise money for the organization, which raises awareness and assists children afflicted with Autism.
“I think it was a big success,” said Mitchell Partnow, the councilman’s chief of staff, who also played starting pitcher for Team Treyger. “We raised a lot of money and it was very fun.”
Team Treyger went on to claim the game 10–8 — perhaps due to a few ringers from the 60th Precinct filling out his squad — but the Autism Angels were the real winners at the end of the night, raising more than $1,300 by selling more than 200 tickets.
“It was such a big hit that we’re in talks to have it again next year,” Partnow said.
After the game, players and supporters were welcomed to a barbecue at Coney Island staple Peggy O’Neill’s, which is no stranger to the Angels, having hosted fund-raising events for the last three years.
“I think it went over great,” said John Imbriale, owner of Peggy O’Neill’s and first baseman for the Autism Angels. “There was a lot of bonding and camaraderie.”
The Brooklyn Cyclones mascot Peewee entertained the children in attendance and local resident and singer Lisette Stennett performed between innings.
“This was a great game and a memorable evening for a truly worthy cause,” said Treyger. “It is great to know that our hard work and efforts will directly benefit families and children throughout the community.”
