August 22 at Lowell
The Cyclones committed a team-record six errors in an ugly 7–1 loss at Lowell which dropped Brooklyn back to .500. The Cyclones used six pitchers in Monday’s game.
Brooklyn took a first inning lead as Gene Cone singled, stole second, moved to third on Desmond Lindsay’s single and scored on a force out.
Lowell came right back. With two on and one out, Ryan Scott singled to center to tie the game. Then Bobby Dalbec singled to put the Spinners ahead. Merandy Gonzalez was done after just 33 pitches and Alejandro Castro recorded the final out of the first inning. Gonzalez gave up two runs on four hits and fell to 4–3 with a 3.21 earned run average after the loss.
Castro pitched a scoreless second inning, but Lowell tagged Dillon Becker in the third. Dalbec hit a two-run homer to center, giving the Spinners a 4–1 lead.
Spinners starter Michael Shawaryn pitched three innings of one-run ball before giving way to Daniel Zandona, who picked up the win with five innings of scoreless relief.
Brooklyn’s bullpen wasn’t as successful.
In the fourth, Becker issued back-to-back walks and was replaced by Gabriel Feliz. With runners on second and third with two outs, Tucker Tubbs hit one to second, but a Michael Paez fielding error allowed both runners to score and put Brooklyn in a 6–1 hole.
The Spinners added a run against Austin McGeorge in the seventh as Dalbec tripled and scored on a groundout.
Jordan Weems pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish things off.
Brooklyn finished with six hits – three of them in the first inning. Cone, Lindsay and Blake Tiberi collected two hits apiece.
The 31–31 Cyclones return to Coney Island for a 7 pm game with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
UPS AND DOWNS
The first 2,000 fans at Tuesday’s game will receive a Lucas “Duda Smash” bobblehead on Super Hero night.
