Brooklyn Heights

Historic Plymouth Church has announced that the Rev. Dr. Brett Younger will be installed as the new senior minister at services on Sept. 25.

Dr. Younger is the 11th settled senior minister at the church in its 169-year history.

Before coming to Plymouth, Dr. Younger was a professor at the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University in Atlanta for eight years. He taught preaching, worship, and writing, and last year he spent five months on sabbatical in Santiago, Chile, as the full-time minister at a multi-denominational church.

He is also the author of six books, two of which he co-authored with his wife Carol, and a frequent conference speaker and workshop leader. Dr. Younger’s articles and sermons have appeared in journals, periodicals, and websites including Christian Century, Feasting on the Word, Lectionary Homiletics, and Review & Expositor.

The Youngers have two sons Graham and Caleb.

Plymouth Church is a parish which enjoys a rich heritage in the Congregational tradition. It welcomes all persons to participate in worship, service, and fellowship.

Standing O welcomes the new minister and wishes him many years of success.

Bedford-Stuyvesant

Three cheers

Let’s hear it for The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation — the giving organization in partnership with The Legacy Center New York and the New York Police Department’s 79th Precinct — which delivered 500 backpacks filled with much-needed school supplies to children at PS 59 in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The event united the community in a block party setting, where children, teachers, and police officers enjoyed a performance by the Youth Drill Team Marching Band, games of double Dutch, an obstacle course, egg races, and a climbing wall donated by the New York Police Department.

Mounted police shared in the day and presented treats with which children could feed the horses.

The foundation raises awareness about dangers faced by law enforcement officers while also helping to support the families that experience the tragedy of losing a family member in the law enforcement profession, its website states. The foundation also desires to develop a positive relationship between our communities and the law enforcement officers who work in them on a regular basis, according to the mission statement.

He’s ‘Ace!’

Ace Hardware Corporation has recognized Matt Mazzone, owner of Mazzone Ace Hardware, as the Ace Hardware Foundation’s 2016 Ace All-Star Retailer.

Standing O pal Matt was selected for his exemplary fund-raising for his local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Matt also helped launch a unique fund-raising initiative with Ace retailers across the organization with World’s Finest Chocolate Bars, and since then more than 1.2 million bars have been sold in Ace stores, generating more than $600,000 for miracle network hospitals across the country in just 16 months. Now that’s a sweet deal!

“I am truly humbled and honored to be named the 2016 All-Star Retailer, and would like to give credit to my incredible team,” said Matt.

In addition, the “Ace” man hosts an annual Pumpkinfest event. The Oct. 8 benefit will feature pumpkin decorating, pony rides, face painting, food, and raffles to benefit the Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Now Matt can add a Standing O to his accolades.
