Kudos aplenty to the 175 middle schoolers at Urban Assembly Unison School as they begin their apprenticeship in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program sponsored by Citizen Schools.
Students began the six-month program with hands-on activities and learning how to build a robot, harness solar energy, design a video game, and pitch an idea to an investor.
Citizen Schools, founded in 1995 in Boston, partners with public middle schools and extends the school day for children in low-income communities. Full-time educators and part-time volunteers from hundreds of top-tier companies provide academic support, college and career readiness training, and apprenticeships.
Together with mentors Citizen strives to assist children in transitioning from middle school to high school, college, and beyond.
Kathrine Mott, executive director of Citizen Schools New York-New Jersey said the internships are invaluable.
“Apprenticeships help transform science, technology, engineering, and math from abstract to tangible concepts for our students, which make a difference in their long-term success,” she said.

There’s a whole lot of promotions going on at Apple Savings Bank. Welcome mats are out for Monika Jaworska, who has been promoted to assistant vice president at the Greenpoint branch; Rosemary Vitale, who steps up to vice president at the Bensonhurst branch; and Steven DiMaggio, who leaves behind his assistant veep position and rises to vice president at the Boro Park branch.
All three honed their chops and worked their way up the corporate ladder by hard work, determination, and commitment, and share more than 30 years of collective experience in the banking community.

The trio was a welcome addition to the Apple Savings Bank family, claimed James Matera, executive veep and head of the bank’s consumer division
“Monika has proven to be an excellent manager and has great success in bringing new customers and business to the bank, Rosemary has exhibited strong skills in product development and customer service and has been an outstanding employee, and Steven has built an impressive track record in business development and customer service,” he said.
Standing O sends out congratulations to each and wishes them a long and successful career.

Three cheers and a huzza to Dr. Gabriel Rincon on his appointment as new chairman of the Board of Trustees at Lutheran Family Health Centers. Dr. Rincon, a dentist, steps up from his position of vice chairman and succeeds Rev. Dr. Samuel Fook Wong, who has served as chairman since 2009.
Dr. Rincon earned his dental degree at New York University, completed his fellowship in oral surgery at Bellevue Hospital, and has a successful dental practice in the community since 1993. As a dedicated community health advocate and Standing O pal Dr. Rincon is well suited to leading the governing body at the center.
Larry McReynolds, president at Lutheran Family Health centers, shared the good news with Standing O.
“Dr. Rincon is perfectly suited to help guide the Lutheran Family Health Centers and help raise critical awareness for our network,” he said.
Standing O agrees completely and wishes him a long and happy tenure.
