STAN’S THE MAN

STAN’S THE MAN

When Stan Williams opened Stan’s Place
in January, he hoped it would be "a hybrid between a cafe
where you can sit down and enjoy a good cup of coffee and a bite,
and a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner."

He’s almost there.

Folks have been enticed by the ornate wrought-iron balcony outside
the cafe that adds a bit of French Quarter charm to Atlantic
Avenue. Once inside, they’re charmed by the eatery’s "delightful
decadence. "Just like in New Orleans," says Williams.
"It’s really warm and welcoming, but slightly overdone."
As an example, he mentions a huge, gilt-edged mirror that hangs
on one wall.

"People just get a kick out of it," says Williams.
They’re digging his down-by-the-Bayou-fixin’s, too. He’s got
all the Big Easy favorites: The New Orleans-style seafood, catfish
or pulled pork po’ boy sandwiches, spicy jambalaya (seafood and
sausage stew cooked with rice) and hearty gumbos, which have
been a big hit. So are the bananas Foster, the breakfast or dessert
treat that consists of bananas sauteed with brown sugar and rum
and topped with vanilla ice cream. Pictured at left are the fried
catfish strips, served with baked grit cakes.

So what’s missing?

Dinner. On Aug. 21, the cafe will close for renovations. And
when they re-open on Sept. 9, they will also offer dinner service
with wine and beer.
