In a star-studded gala held July 29 at the Tribeca Rooftop, González was honored by Children of the City as “The Children’s Champion.”Oscar-winning actor Gwyneth Paltrow was on hand at the event to present the lawmaker with the award.
The event, a fundraiser for the Sunset-Park based group, was hosted by Emmy-award winning journalist Bill Evans, who was master of ceremonies.
Super Bowl winner and New York Giants receiver David Tyree also participated in the ceremonies, and Children of the City board members John Abi-Habib and Richard Mahler were also honored.
Children of the City has been serving underprivileged children in the inner-city communities of Southwest Brooklyn since 1981. The group started out as a children’s prevention outreach in the early years, evolving its programs to include trauma intervention, counseling, an after-school and summer program, courtroom and legal advocacy, social work, guardianship, financial counseling and youth mentoring. Its founder and executive director is Joyce Mattera, who is married to Bishop Joseph Mattera of the Resurrection Church in Sunset Park.
