It’s official: the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society — better known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses — are pulling out of Brooklyn.

More than 101 years of history will be left behind as the Brooklyn-ingrained sect moves forward with an $11.5-million residential and administrative headquarters in upstate Warwick.

“We’ve applied to build a complex and we’ve started the land-use review process,” said Richard Devine, property manager for the organization.

The new center would be the culmination of a multi-year retrenchment from Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. The first step came in 2004, when the Witnesses moved their massive printing plant upstate.

And last year, the Watchtower Society bought a 248-acre site in Ramapo that will be used for offices and some administration, Devine said.

Now, the Witnesses are planning a complex called the World Headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses that will be constructed on the 253-acre Warwick site. More than half of the 1,500-person staff is expected to move the new complex, and will live and work under the same roof.

Devine said the organization is still measuring what to do with roughly 30 buildings and lots that the Witnesses have accumulated in the Heights and DUMBO over the years.

The upstate exodus for the Witnesses — known for their Bible publishing, their door-to-door conversions and their excellent real-estate savvy — is no big surprise given the group’s explosion of property sales since 2004, including:

• 360 Furman St. — a 14-story building which sold in 2004 for $205 million and is currently being redeveloped as the all-luxury, waterfront One Brooklyn Bridge Park.

• 67 Livingston St. — a 26-story tower which went for $18.6 million in 2006.

• 89 Hicks St. — which was sold to the Brooklyn Law School in 2006 for $14 million.

• 169 Columbia Heights — also known as the Standish Arms, this swanky 12-story building was sold for $50 million in late 2007.

• the Bossert Hotel — the crown jewel of the Witnesses’ real-estate holdings, this Montague Street tower remains on the block after a reported buyer backed away from the deal in 2008.

In addition, three properties on Columbia Heights, one on Willow Street and one on Orange Street have been on and off the market over the years, driven by the fluctuation of the housing market. Devine said that the group still plans to sell those, but doesn’t know yet what would be done with the current headquarters and nearby administrative building (both also on Columbia Heights) once the move is complete.

The new complex’s construction is still in the distant future, but one thing’s for sure — the organization is all about moving forward rather than looking back.

“As an organization, we don’t put any special importance [on our Brooklyn Heights history],” Devine said. “Sure, some feel some sentimental value, and I’ve been here for 30 years. But we’re committed to moving all our operations to one central location.”

Follow the money trail..

The apocalyptic Watchtower cult has promised the end-of-the-world-coming any minute &-the-paradise-going-to-fix-all-your problems.
This causes followers to not plan for a future in ‘this system’ so they don’t save for their retirement, don’t go to college, don’t take care of their long term health care.

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society Jehovah’s Witnesses guilt-goaded a million followers to give them their assets including retirement savings promising them a ‘return’ of everlasting life in their own lifetime

TJ from Mississippi says:
your article refers to Jehovah's Witnesses as a "sect". The use of this term carries what I believe is a inaccurate label and negative conotation. see Wikipedia definition below

In the first century true Christians were also called a "sect" by opposers and misinformed individuals. Acts 24:5. In the first century, like Jesus, true Christians were not popular, adhered to Jesus teachings closely, and engaged in the house to house ministry. From that standpoint, who do you feel more apply qualifies as a "sect", Jehovah's Witnesses or other churches in Christendom.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The historical usage of the term sect in Christendom has had pejorative connotations, referring to a group or movement with heretical beliefs or practices that deviate from those of groups considered orthodox.

Although in past it was mostly used to refer to religious groups, it has since expanded and in modern culture can refer to any organization that breaks away from a larger one to follow a different set of rules and principles. The term is occasionally used in a malicious way to suggest the broken-off group follows a more negative path than the original.

David says:
With the Internet now, there is a constant flow of information regarding the Watchtower and the expose' of the Watchtower manipulations, past and present. There are so many sites for the facts of the organization for people, non-JWs and doubting JWs to research. There are sites for the many leaving the organization and not feel alone but can find genuine support. The Watchtower's biggest threat is the Internet and one's they call "apostates," that are ex-JWs really only speaking the truth and facts about this high-mind control religion.

By comparison, the Watchtower hardly speaks of the U.N. as the scarlet-colored wild beast anymore (seeming to try to gradually get out of that falsehood without JWs realizing). It speaks less about the Catholic Church (perhaps because stones are being thrown about JWs having same problem as the CC). The organization keeps changing and stretching their "generation" doctrine.

I have never heard the Witnesses that come to my door tell me that people who don't believe in God must be crazy or whacked out, nuts etc. They only talk to people who want to talk to them. Sounds great, huh? How do we get there? Why, Armageddon of course. Everybody dies. Except for them, practitioners of the one true religion. And they really expect to see this happen in their lifetime - it's not some far-off abstraction.

When that smiley man or woman knocks on your door proffering a magazine, you don't realize they are saying "join our religion OR DIE." But that's the deal. That's why they are so smug about it - it's no skin off their back when you decline. Their whole belief system is a giant revenge fantasy - you had your chance, and soon you're gonna pay.

Let them be.....Just say NO to them like saying NO to drugs
THINK! We got JW's here posting who really think they are the cat's meow and that opposers who have been burned by them and *disgruntled* are evildoers who want all potential recruits to follow them to death and destruction like Satan.

Anony says:
55 reasons Jehovah’s Witnesses will never be reformed
by Frank J. Toth

1. Teaching that true Christianity is an organization instead of a way of life
2. Claiming salvation is dependent upon belonging to the JW denomination
3. Claiming that the organization speaks for and is controlled by Jehovah, thereby equating the organization with God himself

4. Centralizing authority in an organization instead of letting Christ be the head of each Christian
5. Claiming that the “faithful and discreet slave” is the “anointed class” rather than each individual Christian who shows himself or herself to be responsible and obedient to Christ
6. Teaching that the early Christians were led by a governing body

7. Teaching that Jesus appointed the “anointed remnant” as his true church in 1919
8. Viewing the so-called “anointed” class (actually, the governing body) as God’s channel and prophet
9. Placing WT literature above the Bible

10. Frequently taking Bible texts out of context in order to build support for the organization’s man-made teachings and procedures

11. Teaching that Jesus returned in 1914 and is “invisibly present” since then
12. Teaching that Jerusalem was destroyed in 607 BCE when no historical records confirm this and the actual date is believed by nearly all historians to be 587 BCE

13. Falsifying the fact that Charles Russell predicted for 1914 the end of the world, not Christ’s return
14. Lying about a so-called “increase” in earthquakes, warfare, famines, persecution, etc., since 1914
15. Contradictorily condemning military organizations and frowning upon JWs who choose alternative service in lieu of military service while the headquarters organization at the same time owns stock in a military product organization (REGI)

16. Taking a conflicting stand with regard to the United Nations, claiming that it is the “wild beast” of Revelation that leads all nations in a fight against God and Christ at Armageddon, but signing on as an NGO member and publishing articles that present the UN in a favorable light
17. Teaching that it’s wrong to celebrate birthdays and all holidays
18. Teaching that Abraham and the faithful men and women of old are not among the holy ones who will rule with Christ in his Kingdom
19. Interpreting Jewish restoration prophecies as fulfilled in “the anointed remnant”

20. Teaching that the Scriptures are directly addressed only to “the remnant of anointed ones”
21. Teaching that only the “anointed” must be born again
22. Teaching that the “great crowd” are not begotten or anointed by the Holy Spirit

23. Teaching that the “great crowd” are God’s grandchildren and not his sons and daughters
24. Teaching that the “great crowd” are not members of the bride of Christ
25. Teaching that Jesus is not the mediator between God and the “great crowd” of Revelation chapter 7

Anony says:
55 reasons Jehovah’s Witnesses will never be reformed

26. Teaching that the resurrection of the “anointed” precedes the resurrection of the “other sheep” and that it has already begun
27. Teaching that only “anointed” JWs will receive immortality in the resurrection
28. Inviting only the “anointed” to partake at the memorial

29. Claiming that spiritual food comes from the “anointed” class whereas nearly all the writers of WT publications are members of the “other sheep” class

30. Creating a climate of fear by authoritarianism
31. Controlling what individual JWs may read of Bible-related publications that are not produced by the WT Society
32. Arrogantly pretending that the JW organization maintains higher standards than any other religion and proclaiming publicly that all other churches are members of Babylon the Great

33. Forbidding attendance and participation at other churches
34. Class distinctions such as “governing body,” “anointed remnant” and “great crowd of other sheep”
35. Class distinctions such as publishers, auxiliary pioneers, regular pioneers, special pioneers, circuit overseers, district overseers, Bethelites, Governing Body, etc.

36. Prohibiting women from serving in any meaningful role in the congregation while expecting them to do the bulk of the work in “field service”
37. Constantly prodding the membership by means of literature, meetings and conventions to do ever more and more in the service of the organization, promoting an atmosphere where many feel their best is never good enough

38. Setting dates for Armageddon and thereby urging the membership to abandon normal living, this often resulting in the ruination of health and family life, as well as creating employment and financial hardships

39. Teachings that lead the members to believe righteousness and salvation can be earned by devoted and loyal support of the organization’s slavish programs
40. Keeping meeting attendance and field service records as a gauge of an individual’s spirituality

41. Organizationally requiring no blood transfusions instead of letting it be a matter of conscience, thereby cruelly informing all members that they will be shunned by the organization if they accept a transfusion that might restore health following a life-threatening accident or illness

42. Allowing their own infants and children to die instead of allowing doctors to give them necessary blood transfusions
43. Teaching that the “congregation” of Matthew 18:17 is the body of elders
44. Holding heresy trials and disciplinary hearings in secrecy from the rest of the congregation
45. Withholding information that would be helpful to persons who have been accused of wrongdoing

46. Conducting heresy trials of members who have doubts or who think differently upon the Scriptures
47. Defining apostasy as against the organization instead of against God
48. Being quick to disfellowship instead of making efforts to restore persons who have done something wrong

49. Unnecessarily and abusively shunning members even for minor infractions such as smoking or not complying with the whimsical directives of elders, thereby causing personal and family turmoil that often results in immense guilt, shame, fear, depression, bitterness, hatred, murder and suicide
50. Prohibiting fellowship with disassociated persons who show no inclination toward causing dissension

51. Showing favoritism by advising innocent victims to “leave it to Jehovah” instead of the elders taking decisive action to deal with some members who have been accused of harmful wrongdoing.
52. Ignoring or minimizing clear evidence of child molestation and other abuses simply because only one witness is available to testify against the member accused of such serious wrongdoing
53. Covering over and hiding damaging facts about the JW organization

54. In many cases, neglecting the care of their own sick and elderly members who no longer have the strength and energy to attend all the meetings and to be regular in “field service” as they did for most of their lives
55. Blatantly lying to the public by declaring to news media that members may leave the organization at any time, of their own free will and without any repercussions from the organization

First of all every off beat, high control sect uses the 'they will dispise you' line. No one dispises the people but the man made relatively new American religion from the Watchtower. There are retailers that are older than this 'new light' group.
Just for the record, you may want to know that the name Jehovah has been proven that it is not Gods true name, but it is an invention of a catholic church monk. Remember that your religion name was part invented by a member of the evil Christendom.

Check it out at your local library next time you take a potention convert there to prove to them Christmas is pagan.

There is clearly a lot of vitriol spinning around the Witnesses, which is of course exactly what they expect--it's been prophesied.
Convenient that a systematized culture of insularity, sexual discrimination, legal manipulation, child abuse and isolation, and brainwashing tends to bring that up in people.
Presto!--self-fulfilling prophecy, made to order.

Doctrinal changes *new light*

It wouldn't matter at all if the Watchtower society went round saying this is what we think at the present moment but it might well be wrong later.
Unfortunately they do not say that, in fact they say the opposite. If A JW does not accept their new idea and sticks with what they think is the correct understanding then they would be kicked out.
That is why it is a big deal if they change something. The unity at all costs, can tear families apart thanks to the Watchtower arrogance, and lack of humility.
Feb. 26, 2010, 9:27 am
Taylor from USA says:
Flip Flop

Flip flop, flip flop
Will these changes ever stop?
New light is needed. We’ve encountered a hitch
For goodness sake, someone throw the switch
It’s 1914, and we shouldn't’t be here
We said this would be our rapture year
So let’s try and think up a brand new date
But we need to hurry, it’s getting late

Flip flop, flip flop
If we need blood, we’ll take a drop
Oh no we won’t, as we now think
That blood is something we shouldn't’t drink
Well, maybe we can relax a bit
Not take whole blood, just parts of it
But we’ll make it clear what can be used
So that our members don’t get confused

Flip flop, flip flop
We need this Douglas Walsh trial to stop
We’re under pressure as the lawyer tries
To force us to admit that we’ve told lies
We daren’t do that, we’ll put up a fight
Although it’s obvious that he’s right
We’ve prophesied falsely, there is no doubt
Let’s hope our members never find out

Flip flop, flip flop
Preach the good news and never stop
For 1975 is certain to bring
An end to this old system of things
Well, ’75 has been and gone
But still the system carries on
But don’t accuse us of telling lies
We never once promised you paradise

Flip flop, flip flop
By the year 2000 this system must stop
For the 1914 generation will not pass away
Before Jehovah brings his great day
But now we’ve reached 1995
And few 1914ers are still alive
So new light has to shine again
Or we’ll have yet another failure to explain

Flip flop, flip flop
The 1914 theory is for the chop
Now it’s those who dare to refuse. To listen to the Watchtower’s message of truth
That’s the generation that won’t pass away Before Jah’s great and glorious day
So unless they listen to what’s being said
When Armageddon strikes, they’ll all be dead

Flip flop, flip flop
The number of anointed just won’t drop
Although it’s 70 years, and more
Since we locked up heaven’s door
We can never admit to making a mistake
But we need a reason why so many partake
So let’s allow more to hear heaven’s call
By saying the gathering hasn’t ended after all

Flip flop, flip flop
Predicting dates really ought to stop
But although 1914 is so far away
Maybe we can link it with Noah’s day
He built the ark in 120 years
That might give people a few ideas
But we must be careful never to say
That 2034 will bring Jehovah’s day

Flip flop, flip flop
Another generation theory to drop
Although for many years we’ve said
That by Armageddon the anointed would be dead
Jah has sent us more new light
And we’ve finally managed to get it right
So when Armageddon finally does arrive
Some of the anointed will still be alive

Flip flop, flip flop
The apostates have caught us on the hop
This new generation truth
Isn’t that new, and they have proof
They’ve found a magazine that shows
We published it over 80 years ago
We thought this idea would see us through
But we’ll have to come up with something new

Flip flop, flip flop
Perhaps it’s time we put a stop
To taxing our brains in figuring out
What this generation is really about
Because we’ve had yet more new light
And hopefully this idea will be right
For what “this generation” really means
Is those who knew people alive in 1914

Flip flop, flip flop
The changes of doctrine never stop
It’s oh so subtle how they back away
Form any teaching that’s had it’s day
And most of their members don’t realise
That what they’re being taught is a pack of lies
But one day the truth will be seen
And they’ll be exposed as the liars they’ve always been

Feb. 26, 2010, 11:35 am
Rachel says:
The Watchtower demands loyalty and if anyone decides to leave because they disagree with doctrine ,the remaining family members are commanded by the religion to shun those who have left.
They will try to spin it so that it looks like some immorality was committed but most of the time that is not the case.

The Watchtower would probably be shocked at the number of members who are still in as elders and ministerial servants who don't believe in the religion anymore but are staying because of the shunning policy.
Investigate buyer beware do research on any group like this that has a lot of disgruntled members.
Feb. 26, 2010, 5:22 pm
Alex from Canada says:
It is a joke. The organization books gloss over the disfellowshiping info when indoctrinating new 'persons of good will'.
After you shed all your 'worldy' friends and limit your non-beliver family, you build up a network of only Witness associations.
Don't forget from the perverted NWT of the Bible...Bad associates spoil useful habits.
After baptism utopia wears off and you start to think things through the member starts to see the holes and inconsistencies in the JW teachings. But it's too late. In for a penny...in for a pound. At this point you may not disagree with even the smallest detail of the old men governing body. If you do you are labeled proud or even worse...an independent thinker who doesn not trust Gods organization.
So in the end you and your family are held hostage for life. Your spouse is expected to report you if you show any so called 'apostacy'. Nice word that apostacy. The Jehovah's Witness think it means only someone who leaves their group. Funny, the last time I read the dictionary it ment any religion or political party etc.
So the sad end is you choose your family/friends or your conscience.
How sad this high control group is.
It deserves the title of a cult like group.

A POEM ABOUT CHILD ABUSE IN
THE WATCHTOWER SOCIETY

Suffer the little children
Jesus was heard to say
Let them come to me
Never turn them away

For children are so precious
Truly a gift from above
They are fully deserving
Of our unconditional love

We value all our children
The Watchtower declares
We shelter and protect them
Keep them from life’s snares

From the moment of their birth
And on into their youth
We teach them about Jehovah
And all his precious truth

Yet the Watchtower’s actions
Make their words a lie
For throughout their congregations
Children suffer, children cry

Their teaching gives no protection
From the danger that they face
From men that would abuse them
There is no hiding place

For these men are their brothers
And they are told they must
Always love and respect them
In them put their trust

So they are able to carry on
With their vile abuse
Safe in the knowledge
That they will not be accused

For the Watchtower’s rules demand
Two witnesses to every sinful act
So children have to suffer
And continue to be attacked

While the Watchtower turns away
Pretending not to hear
The cries of children suffering
In anguish, pain and fear

Jehovah's Witnesses were/are the largest landowner in Brooklyn?

The Watchtower Society corporation in 2010 is cashing in on their Kingdom assets.Selling off property in Brooklyn and moving upstate to their Patterson complex.
Three generations of my Jehovah's Witnesses family donated heavily to the Watchtower investing in their *new order* after Armageddon.

Jehovah's Witnesses are noted for their chief doctrine that Jesus had his second coming in 1914 and going door to door with Watchtower magazines, google * Jehovah's Witnesses Watchtower * for facts on this group.

Jehovah's Witnesses are a purely evil cult. They use mind control to indoctrinate innocent people, including children, in their destructive beliefs and practices. It is not a legitimate religion, it is a cult. Members don't believe this, because they are brainwashed.

Keep them away from your home and family by whatever means necessary.
EVIL to the CORE Wolves in Sheep's Clothing!

The Jehovah Witness are EXACTLY like Scientology

[Except Scientology don't knock on your door and try to recruit your kids so Jehovahs are WORSE]

Lyon says:

Jehovah's Witnesses UN hypocrisy.

The Watchtower Society took a conflicting stand with regard to the United Nations, claiming that it is the “wild beast” of Revelation that leads all nations in a fight against God and Christ at Armageddon, but signing on as an NGO member and publishing articles that present the UN in a favorable light. Reaping the whirlwind'{ Hosea 8:7 }Jehovah's Witnesses usually don't meddle in local politics, they did hook up with the World UN for political advantage, they are not a peaceful body, the Watchtower Society leadership is an oppressive cruel high control cult to followers.

Moreover, they believe in the imminent Armageddon deaths of all 6 billion of the world's population who are non members.

So,this does make them an extremist group?

BP from NY says:
Lyon: President Obama's physician reports the President in good health but he needs to stop smoking or it could impact his health negatively. No reasonable person would conclude the doctor's opinion was a threat posed to the President from the doctor, or view the doctor as an extremist for warning Mr. Obama his smoking habit hurts his overall health & could pose a serious threat to his life expectancy. How the President responds to the good doctor's prognosis could determine how healthy the President will be & for how long.

The JW's interpretation of the Bible leads them to believe God intends to intervene to replace all the human governments of the earth today w/God's Kingdom, & only that eventuality can ever bring about God's will on earth. You don't agree, that certainly is your prerogative & your right.

Believing this & concluding there are serious implications resulting from this & then endeavoring to persuade others this is so may make any or all of them foolish, ridiculous, easily manipulated, uncool, extreme, (un)wise, scholarly, visionary, uncompromising, or any &/or all of a # of these or other things. IMO, it doesn't make them an "extremist" group. Demonizing them in this manner, though, does strike me as more than just a little inaccurate & yes, extreme.

Jehovah's Witnesses controversy a nutshell:

Cult-like hard core apocalyptic fundy Watchtower is an 1870 splinter group from the William Miller *great disappointment* fallout.

They have kept followers on the edge of the seat and drained them dry after pinning all their hopes and dreams on the always just around the corner post armageddon *paradise".
They took everything from many followers including lots and lots of money.NOW bloated with wealth... all they can do is stagger around and shoot critic messengers and say the Catholic church was worse with it's atrocities and exaggerate some of the few beneficial JW legacies.

They ripped off millions most who just grew old and died so can't say anything back now.

The A number one fear of the Watchtower is bad PR and lawsuits for fraud, just like Scientology same lawyers same spin doctors same shills same everything.

How about doing some research on your own "religion" if you have one to see where they are rooted or how certain false doctrines being taught into today's churches came about. Lets remember that Martin Luther broke away from the Catholic church - The Protestant Reformation.(Remember?) He also brought with him some Catholic teachings. Do some reseach on the Roman Empire. There are several denomentions. Jesus only preached one gospel. So why so many? Stop bashing the Watchtower and do your researching on your own religion/Christendom. :)

TJ said regarding definition of 'sect' : Although in past it was mostly used to refer to religious groups, it has since expanded and in modern culture can refer to any organization that breaks away from a larger one to follow a different set of rules and principles.

Um.. EXACTLY. I think you should do some research on the origins of the JW cult... I mean religion.

Most annoying thing is that most if not all JW's cant take ANY criticism at all, then go criticizing every other religion in the world. For those of you who want REAL truth, do some research on why JWs were members of the UN (Check UN sits - not apostate, or ask your local branch) for example.

There have been repeated instances of slanderous, hateful and abusive vitriol spewed on this site, but no action taken yet on removal or banning, it seems.
Interesting how a simple article on an organization's plans of relocation/liquidation of property could generate such sputtering rage.
One wonders if the fit-throwers would have the same courage if weaned from the secure haven of their

the majority of people who hate jw are usually those who are disfellowshipped or are upset their way of thinking is not accepted by other jw. you can see this in the bitterness in their posts. they focus on the negative rather than offer anything positive. but isn't that typical with any organization or company with opposers? there will always be opposers pushing their own agenda. i know several who have left the truth for various reasons...some trivial, others not so trivial like homosexuality. i say...if you don't agree and want to live a different lifestyle...do it. if you want to believe that jw don't have the truth...believe that. that's what free will is all about. but don't get mad if noone else agrees or follows you.

Unless anyone does the research into the organization and Charles T. Russell they will not know the truth and are ignorant of the facts. For me, to find out the truth was horrifying and sad and made me extremely angry. Just because someone researches a subject and the SUBJECT comes up dirty does not make the researcher an apostate like the society would like to make it seem. It makes the SUBJECT guilty of terrible things. The organization is founded upon lies, false prophecy, freemasonry. It promotes hatred within families, makes friends abandon friends. Jesus said to love one another. Just on this point they cannot be a true religion.

There is no true religion - every organized religion is controlling. Jesus said "I am the WAY and the TRUTH and the LIFE" He did not pass on the torch to any man made organization. He knew full well the control and abuse that could result in man leading man.

They became members of the UN - secretly.

They hide rapists and pedophiles behind the two witness policy. They say they want to defend God's name. God wants us to defend our children. He can and will defend himself.

The Watchtower is a mind control cult who has grown rich on our ignorance and fear.

Please do the research. Please wake up.
