Should-be award-winning reporter Dana Rubinstein discusses CitiBike on Brooklyn Paper Radio

It was another thrilling episode of Brooklyn Paper Radio as hosts Gersh Kuntzman of the New York Daily News and Brooklyn Paper editor-in-chief Vince DiMiceli were joined by Politico reporter Dana Rubinstein, whose ground-breaking reporting on CitiBikes in New York City has revealed many things to many readers and, specifically, Gersh Kuntzman.

“You know, I did not know that CitiBike had to pay for the space all its docking stations it takes up,” Kuntzman said. “Until I read about it in a story by Rubinstein.”

But Rubinstein, a former Brooklyn Paper reporter, noted that others had written that, and Gersh missed it.

“The big news is it is expanding to Staten Island and the Bronx,” she pointed out.

DiMiceli wondered if the service pays the city only for the spaces on metered streets, a question Rubinstein said she would look into.

“I that is why I am a good editor,” DiMiceli said. “Because that is the first question I would have asked.”

It was agreed upon by the talkers that the reason for the proposed expansion is the threat of competition by so-called “dock-less” bike rental services — Uber-like services that promise to rent bikes without having to build a place to house them when they are not being used — looking to move into the city, a move that would make it more difficult for CitiBike to turn a profit.

“So it is the threat of competition that is driving this change,” DiMiceli pointed out.

Also on the show, the boys unveiled a new segment — “Johnny on the Spot” — during which they asked millennial producer Johnny (or Jimmy, or whatever his name is) what was going on in the news. Alas, he was unsure.

Finally, the boys previewed Johnny’s new show on CNG Radio, “The Johnny and Hersh Show,” an obvious rip-off of the original title of Brooklyn Paper Radio, “The Vinny and Gersh Show.”

“It took me a while to find a person named ‘Hersh’ to make this happen,” the producer said.

That show will debut later this month or early next month.

Pay for the public space? I'll admit I did not know. I did read of a similar situation in Dublin Ireland in the Irish Times. A hospital had requested the parking meters on an adjacent street be removed and the spaces be restricted for doctors. The government agency responsible for the collection of the meter money billed the hospital for the loss of revenues. I don't know how it turned out.

Here in NYC I have figured the common metered space outside Manhattan CBD could generate $3,000/year in fees to the City coffers and depends on it to provide services. I'm being conservative in my estimate and not including any fines or penalties associated with daily ASP, staying pass the purchased time or not "feeding the meter".

Of late the City is annually billing new construction that encroaches passed the building lot line and onto the public way. There is a longstanding charge for a "vault tax" for encroaching beyond the lot line below the surface. The City is searching for more instances. The annual fees run into the thousands and some old Manhattan structure are going to great expense to fill these "vault".

Not insignificant sums at all. You do the math.

Now tell me what is the City bill to Citibike?

Citi Bike pays the city for any metered spaces it takes up. (Although most stations are in non-metered spaces or on sidewalks and plazas.) Indeed, it's most recent offer to the city to expand the system with an additional 6,000 bikes includes a request to no longer pay that fee.

How much to driver pay for most of the parking in NYC?

Resident, you might not drive a car on a normal basis, but I do, and I know that spaces are paid for via tax for infrastructure. Just because we motorists aren't paying right on the spot, doesn't mean that we aren't paying for it all. Also, there are yearly fees that we have to pay for that include licensing, registration, inspection, and a few others to which none of them are cheap or free, plus we can get fined for failing to renew any of them when needed. Getting back to Citi Bike, this was supposed to be a program that would pay for itself, but that hasn't been the case, and now the public needs to provide funding even with Citibank being involved. The reason why some locations are getting opposed isn't just about the parking, but also because some see it as a waste of space since most don't ride bicycles all year long not to mention that not everyone is fit to ride a bicycle. More importantly, commuting by bicycle is just under 1%, which makes many feel that it's the wrong place to fund for a group that is only a fraction of a fraction.

Also, it costs like thousands of dollars just to cross a bride or go through a tunnel in this dump.
And that is just to beat your vehicle to hell on these crumbling roads.

Cost more in tolls to go from NYC to Boston than does the fuel.... disgusting racket of a "government".
