While the whistling wind drowned out the sound of a tree cracking in half off the Belt Parkway, the curses from stranded motorists were loud and clear Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Traffic along the Belt Parkway was snarled for upwards of two hours during the height of the September 6 storm as firefighters tried to chop up and remove a set of heavy limbs that shuffled off their mortal coils and lay across two of the three westbound lanes.

Leaves and branches covered the remaining lane, creating a slow going commute for drivers motoring through the eye of the storm.
