The public school system may be revamped in just two months — so Brooklynites should make their voices heard now.
In recent weeks, several public hearings were held to allow parents and community residents to weigh in on the law granting the mayor total control of the school system.
That law sunsets in June and the state legislature will consider the public’s comments when deciding whether to renew the law as is, change it, or create a completely new form of school governance.
Next week, two forums will be held in Brooklyn about mayoral control.
“It is important to hear the opinions of those who have daily experience in our schools as well as those whose academic expertise is unmatched,” said state Senator Eric Adams.
On April 26, leading the discussion will be Adams, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, City Councilmember Letitia James, and Assemblymember Inez Barron, who is a former principal.
Education advocates and experts will also participate, includingmoderator Elizabeth Green of Gotham Schools, United Federation of Teachers (UFT) Vice President Carmen Alvarez, Campaign for Better Schools Co-Director Leticia Alanis, and Carla Phillip of the Parent Commission on School Governance and Mayoral Control.
The discussion will begin at 3 p.m. at Union Temple, 17 Eastern Parkway.
Another forum is scheduled for April 30 at 6 p.m. at the Teen Challenge Center, 444 Clinton Avenue. It will feature a similar line-up of speakers as well as Dr. Lester Young, a professor at LIU’s Graduate School of Education and a former superintendent in School District 13.
