Luna Park resident Zina Zeidel moved the audience to a hush when she took to the podium and recited a poem about loss of her family, and the destruction of her hometown, during a Holocaust memorial at the Manhattan Beach Jewish Center.
Zeidel, who fled her native Polish-Ukraine just before the Nazis arrived, read the poignant piece she wrote at the war’s end as part of a Yom Hashoah program at the synagogue, 60 West End Avenue, attended by other survivors and their relatives, whose tear-invoking testimonies immortalized the horrors.
Mourner Eva Uszerowicz brought along a photograph of her brother and his fiancée, both of whom were murdered in Hitler’s reign of terror, and Edith Moses and Sam Rayner rolled up their sleeves to reveal the scars of their ordeal.
Eight candles were illuminated to commemorate those who perished in the death camps.
