Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old East New York man in connection with the attempted rape of a 51-year-old woman at Shirley Chisholm State Park in Sept. 2023, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Amadou Kane, 22, was arraigned Mar. 17 before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Kitsis on an indictment charging him with first-degree robbery as a sexually motivated felony, first-degree attempted rape, first-degree attempted sexual abuse, attempted forcible touching, and related charges.

The incident occurred on Sept. 12, 2023, around 4:30 p.m., when the victim was jogging in East New York park.

According to the victim, a man on a bicycle initially rode past her before grabbing her from behind, throwing her to the ground, and punching her repeatedly. During the struggle, the victim pulled off the suspect’s mask and recognized him as the man on the bicycle.

According to prosecutors, the suspect allegedly threatened to kill the victim with a knife and demanded she pull down her pants. As he began to pull down his pants, he fled upon hearing a stranger approach on a motorcycle. Before escaping, he also allegedly stole the victim’s Apple Watch.

The 51-year-old jogger immediately called 911 and sought help from a nearby park ranger. New York State Troopers later recovered surveillance footage showing the suspect fleeing the park on his bicycle and using Apple Pay to purchase a bottle of water at a nearby store, the DA’s office said.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said Kane was identified as the suspect following an extensive investigation that utilized financial records, cell site data, and social media.

“This defendant is alleged to have followed the victim during a daylight jog and attempted to rape her. Luckily, he was foiled by a stranger,” Gonzalez said. “Thanks to the painstaking work of state troopers and my office, he was identified and will now be brought to justice.”

At the March 17 hearing, Kane’s bail was set at $150,000 cash or $350,000 bond. He was ordered to return to court on April 25.
