SYBIL PLEASURES
David Travis

Perhaps you remember the one-woman-play,
"There Goes
the Neighborhood
," written by Mari Brown and performed
by Deanna Pacelli in Smith Street’s Bar Below, back in the fall
of ’03? Then, the show, exploring the gentrification of Carroll
Gardens through Pacelli’s spot-on impersonations of local characters,
was a hit with GO Brooklyn theater critic Paulanne Simmons.

If you missed seeing the people in your neighborhood the first
time around, Brown’s show has been revived by Synapse Productions
at Performance Space 122 in Manhattan, beginning May 12.

Fittingly for a play about gentrification, the ticket prices
are up from $8 (and a free beer!) at Bar Below to $15 in Manhattan.
But the familiar characters remain. Directed by Brown and David
Travis, the play includes a diverse array of residents – including
an Italian deli owner, a Latina teen, a gay yuppie activist,
a hip-hop DJ – who explain how the working class community went
from "crack to baguettes" in less than a decade.

Synapse Productions’ presentation of "There Goes the Neighborhood"
will be performed May 12-29 at Performance Space 122, 150 First
Ave. at East Ninth Street in Manhattan. For students and seniors,
tickets are $12. To purchase tickets, call (212) 477-5288 or
visit the Web site at www.synapseproductions.org.
