The Brooklyn-based Big Onion Walking Tours hosts a number of walks spotlighting the borough.
The tour on August 1, 6 and 24, spotlights Brooklyn Bridge & Brooklyn Heights (there is also an August 16, 5 p.m. twilight tour that follows the same route): a walking tour across the Brooklyn Bridge and through the city’s first suburb focusing on the history, architecture, and people of this unique area. Stops include Plymouth Church, the A.A. Low Mansion, and sites associated with Arthur Miller, Victoria Woodhull, Robert Moses and Norman Mailer. The tour starts at 11 a.m. Meet at the southeast corner of Broadway and Chambers Street at City Hall Park on Manhattan.
August 9 spotlights Green-Wood Cemetery: covering 478 acres and containing more than 600,000 graves, Green-Wood is New Yorks great Victorian “City of the Dead”. This tour is an introduction to the history, architecture, and people of this Brooklyn treasure. Stops include the graves of Charles Ebbets, Louis C. Tiffany, and Charlotte Canda. The tour starts at 1 p.m. Meet at Green-Woods main entrance, Fifth Avenue & 25th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
August 10 offers a glimpse into Prospect Park: designed by Olmsted & Vaux and covering almost 600 acres, Prospect Park is a masterpiece of design, including a 60-acre lake, meadows, hills, and waterfalls, not to mention Brooklyn’s only remaining natural forest. Stops include the Oriental Pavilion, the Vale of Cashmere, the Long Meadow, the Camperdown Elm and sites associated with Stanford White, Lord Stirling and Marianne Moore. The tour starts at 1 p.m. Meet at the intersection of Prospect Park West and Ninth Street, at the Marquis de Lafayette memorial.
