What happens when you take Cirque de Soleil and cross it with the “Yellow Submarine?” You get Suspended Cirque’s “Urbanopolis,” at the Galapagos Art Space.
Dancers hang from chains, fly through the air, and submerge themselves in water, all accompanyied by multi-colored lighting and trippy music.
OK, so the plot is ridiculous — a fairytale featuring a young urbanite who falls into a futuristic labyrinth with a scampering rabbit. But the choreography and visual effect are stunning.
And you can’t beat “De La Guarda” action for just $20.
Five dancers started this troupe a few years ago after working the acrobatic circuit for years — on Broadway, at Above the Belt and the Trapeze School, the works.
They wanted a show that would be sensual, but not burlesque, entertaining but not overdone.
“We don’t just do the physicality, we tell a story through it,” said Angela Jones, one of the performers.
One of the dances is a four-performer act on a fake chandelier. As they say on TV, don’t try that one at home, kids.
