The tree was fake and the traditional venue was closed, but that didn’t stop merrymakers from having a revel and a half on Dec. 6 when the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District held its tree lighting ceremony at ‘snice.
The cafe at Fifth Avenue and Third Street lived up to its ducky name by graciously accommodating the group’s annual Yuletide festivities, relocated this year from nearby Washington Park, which is currently being overhauled.
An icky downpour was an unwelcome guest during the festivities, but the jolly turn-out stuck around long enough to slurp hot chocolate, listen to seasonal songs from Rolie Polie Guacamole and the MS 51 Chorus, and hobnob with Santa, convincingly played by good sport Betsi Akram.
The frolic was a magnet for seekers of simple pleasures, explained Irene LoRe, the group’s executive director.
“It was shockingly good,” she said. “We had everybody there from toddlers to seniors!”
