Revival Reggae Sundays, weekly dance parties paying tribute to some of the reggae industry’s biggest artists, continue this month at the LOX Lounge, 15 Putnam Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
May 18 brings Jacob Miller and Sugar Minott. At age 10, Miller knew that he would become a singer. Born May 4, 1952 Jacob would only spend a short time on earth before his life was lost in a tragic accident in 1980. He was only 27 years old.
In this short time, Miller accomplished so much with hits such as “Tenement Yard” and “All Night ‘Till Daylight.” In 1977 as lead singer for the group Inner Circle, Miller was signed to capitol Records. Later he would sign with Chris Blackwell’s Label Island Records and open for the legend Bob Marley.
Lincoln Barrington Minott a.k.a. Sugar Minott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, May 25, 1956. Few artists have had the impact on Jamaica’s dancehall scene as Minott. Minott is credited with more than 60 albums, 27 of which were produced by him and more than 1,000 45’s.
May 25 brings the International Reggae Music Tribute. Reggae Music can now be heard the world over. From the earlier days of Ska and Rocksteady to Dubwise, Dancehall and Culture, reggae music has truly become an international art form. What started on the island on Jamaica has now spread past the furthest boundaries on earth.
Artists such as Born Jamericans and Matisyahu from United States, Alpha Blondy from the Ivory Coast, UB 40 from the UK, Collie Buddz from Bermuda, Natural Black from Guyana and the late Lucky Dube from South Africa, have all been in the forefront of Reggae.
