A new coworking space in Gowanus has officially opened its doors. The Shop Workspace, located at 420 Carroll St., is a mixed-use development that will cement itself in one of Brooklyn’s most dynamic and evolving neighborhoods.

Designed by FXCollaborative with interiors by Alan Mainer Studios, The Shop occupies 12,000 square feet on the building’s second floor. The space caters to “freelancers, creative professionals and growing businesses rooted in the evolving Gowanus community.”

Nearly half of the new location’s studios are already leased, signaling strong local demand.

Anne Olson, director of coworking at The Shop Workspace, said the space is “designed to foster collaboration and growth for professionals across various industries. The Shop is not just about work but also community engagement, with events, partnerships with local nonprofits and initiatives that enhance members’ daily lives.”

The workspace blends modern design with practical amenities. Members have access to “utilities, pet-friendly offices and storage space, shared common areas, meeting spaces, cutting-edge technology, phone booths” and more. Private office suites come with furnished layouts, high-speed VLAN connections and soundproofing details.

Memberships start at $450 monthly for Commons access, including 10,000 square feet of coworking space, unlimited coffee and access to networking events. Private suites for individuals or teams of up to ten, beginning at $1,400 monthly, with flexible terms available. Day passes and hourly bookings for meeting and event spaces are also offered, starting at $35 per day.

Beyond office amenities, The Shop plans to invest directly in Gowanus’ arts community. By partnering with Arts Gowanus and made possible by Gowanus Mix zoning, the company will “offer subsidized spaces for local artists.” Seven studios have already been awarded through a lottery system managed by Arts Gowanus, while six additional Gowanus Mix studios are available at reduced rates for neighborhood businesses. Studios start at $6.50 per square foot and are offered on “renewable, year-long commitments.”

By opening the location, Olson said they will “be able to bring this rich, community-centered work environment to the heart of the Gowanus neighborhood.”

The Shop also plans to open a Greenpoint location “soon,” though no timeline has been announced. The company currently has operations set up in Salt Lake City and New Orleans.
