Just two more weeks until the winter solstice, when the days will steadily begin to get longer and longer as we inch our way towards summertime (YES!). But think of it this way: long nights mean even more time to party it up in the County of Kings, so take advantage of it all because Brooklyn, it’s finally, finally — yes that’s right, it really is — your weekend!
•Start your Friday off right with a trip to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden (it’s free on weekdays during the winter, so take a stroll before it goes warm and you have to pay!) and check out the new collection of artistic terrariums and artwork inspired by nature, by artists Jae Hi Ahn and Jennifer Williams, the Garden’s curator.
•Walk across to street to the Brooklyn Museum and check out the highly controversial show, “Hide/Seek,” that features a piece of art so racy it was banned from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. It’s cool — Brooklyn can handle it. Our very own Butcher of Flatbush Ave. Extension loved it; we think you will, too.
• Then, walk across the street to Classon Avenue and check out the Where Am I Gallery’s first art installation in six vacant storefronts, called “Food Lust: Shock Candy,” which deals with — you guessed it! — candy, food and sex.
Friday evening, check out a puppet show. That’s right: a puppet show, courtesy of the Band of Puppets Festival at the Brooklyn Star in Bushwick. There will be a puppet made of a sweatshirt, a hat and a pair of shoes. Hilarious? We think so.
• Friday night, head to the Bell House for Carnivorous Nights, a weird, wild taxidermy party!
• Hungry? Go check out Sadie’s Kitchen, a new mac and cheese parlor, and get your carb on (with some five spice duck and three kinds of mushrooms, of course)!
• On Saturday afternoon, stop by Wicked Good Franks in Bedford-Stuyvesant a grab a New England-style frank. Then, if you’re feeling adventurous, check out some other geographically themed hot dog joints peppered throughout our fair borough!
• Need some pickle juice and whisky to wash down that beef? Head over to Brooklyn Oenology for a whisky, pickle and beef jerky tasting. Yes, we’re serious — and it’s delicious!
• Then, spend the rest of your Saturday afternoon learning about Brooklyn’s maritime history at the Navy Yard museum! Who wouldn’t wanna?
• Saturday evening, check out Brooklyn-based graffiti legends at their brand new art show at FiveMyles Gallery in Prospect Heights.
• Keep your Saturday night going strong with a trip to St. Ann’s Warehouse in DUMBO and check out Irish hottie Cillian Murphy as he takes the stage in his American theater debut in the one-man show, “Misterman.”!
• After that, spend Saturday night with Brooklyn-based funk-soul outfit OTiS at South Paw in Park Slope, funkin’ it up.
• Start your Sunday with a stroll Downtown — and be sure to stop by Atlantic Avenue throwback shop, Dry Goods — your one-stop shop for all things old timey.
• Before all the leaves fall off the trees, head over to McCarren Park for a walk — and stop at the clean and newly re-opened Turkey’s Nest bar and grab a frozen margarita on your way!
