Are you kidding us? This weekend is so busy, even The Weekender doesn’t know what to do. But here are some ideas:
• The big party is on Saturday when the tanker, Mary Whalen, gets feted for its 70th birthday. Funny, but she doesn’t look a day over 50! The party is from 11 am to 5 pm on Pier 11 (Pioneer and Conover streets in Red Hook). For info, visit www.portsidemarywhalen.eventbrite.com.
• On Sunday, it’s dueling authors at dueling temples at the same time. At the Garfield Temple [274 Garfield Pl., at Eighth Avenue in Park Slope, (718) 768-3814], Moustafa Bayoumi discusses his book, “How Does It Feel to Be a Problem: Being Young and Arab in America.” At Union Temple [17 Eastern Parkway at Grand Army Plaza in Park Slope, (718) 638-7600], New York Times writer Steven Greenhouse (pictured) will talk about the economic collapse. Aren’t they related? Both readings are at 11 am.
• Also, Randy Kaplan is at Southpaw in Park Slope at 2 pm on Sunday!
• Let’s make some noise! The Blip Festival runs through Sunday at The Bell House in Gowanus.
• Don’t forget Frank Hoier’s show at Union Pool in Williamsburg on Sunday night. To get in the mood, check out his live version of “Jesus Don’t Give Tax Breaks to the Rich” in our exclusive podcast.

• Check out John Carlin, the kiddie Steve Forbert, at a holiday music show and gifts fair in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday?
• How about heading to Red Hook to look for Steve Tarpin’s dog?
• And, as our editorial board reminds you, why not go holiday shopping locally this weekend? One good idea is the new cookbooks by Jacques Torres and the guys from Baked (or merely following their brownie recipes in The Brooklyn Paper). Another is the new book about jetpacks by Windsor Terrace author Mac Montandon.
• You still have a few days to fill out your F-line report card.
As always, these and other great events are in our exclusive family calendar, our great nightlife calendar, and our matchless events calendar.
