The sky was black over Floyd Bennett Field the night of June 11, but it looked like a box of crayons had spilled on the ground.
That’s because Aviator Sports and Events Center played host to Color Run Night, an evening version of the 5K running and body painting extravaganza. The event was a big hit with attendees.
“It was so much fun,” said Mary Haley, who participated with a group of friends. “It was really well put together and organized.”
Face-painted exercise enthusiasts run the 5,000-meter course while getting pelted with packets of colored powder by Color Run staff at regular intervals.
Some participants choose to walk the course, but they will get a rainbow paint job also — more so, really, because they make easy targets.
The running gives way to dancing upon completion of the course, as the mass of rainbow warriors gather by a stage and get down to tunes spun by a disc jockey. You don’t have to be a passionate jogger to participate, but Haley said the event has the potential to make runners out of people.
“I think that if people who didn’t like running did it, they would start,” Haley said. “You’re getting out and doing something active. When you see the color station ahead, you want to get there, and it motivates you to run faster.”
Haley only had one complaint about the event.
“I want more colors!”
