Tanya O’Debra’s one-woman production, “Radio Show,” is based on the respectable, clean broadcasts of the 1940s, but chaste it sure isn’t.
“My show has a raunchy sensibility to it,” said O’Debra. “If people come expecting wholesome, that’s not what they are going to get.”
The 45-minute piece, being performed at Glasslands on Aug. 19, uses old school sound effects, such as actual doors and phones, and O’Debra plays all of the characters of the classic hard-boiled detective story.
That was more difficult than she expected.
“It’s hard to make female voices sound different,” said the would-be Blanc.
O’Debra said she came up with idea when she decided to enter this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
“I needed a project where I could carry everything by myself,” said O’Debra. “Radio doesn’t need props.”
The show at Glasslands in Williamsburg will be her first and only time performing the piece before heading across the pond to, hopefully, make a name for herself.
“I wanted to preview at Glasslands because it is a really homey kind of place,” she said. “The Brooklyn audience is more relaxed. They get into the performance much quicker.”
