Those helicopters this morning? That was cops doing their job

Ask and you shall receive.

Commentators on BrooklynPaper.com who were roused from slumber by a helicopter hovering over Williamsburg want to know what was going on — and we’ve got the answer.

Police flew in the heavy artillery while in pursuit of a trio of burglary suspects cops say broke into a basement on Manhattan Avenue between Richardson and Bayard streets. The choppers — apparently there was more than one — flew overhead near McCarren Park for about two hours shining spotlights down on rooftops as cops on the ground chased down and apprehended all but one of the suspects

Police arrested two men, a 21-year-old and a 25-year-old.

The frantic search began at 3:13 am when someone called police to report three men prying open a cellar door.

When the alleged burglars realized they were cornered, they fled into the backyard of a house and climbed onto an adjacent roof, police said.

The two have been charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest.

The arrests come on the heels of string of burglaries in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, but police have not yet determined if the incidents are related.

All the noise made some noise on BrooklynPaper.com this morning, with many commentators wondering what all the ruckus was about.

“Was this what the NYPD helicopter was doing in the neighborhood this morning at around 4 am for quite a while?” wondered John from Williamsburg, sparking a back-and-forth between know-it-alls that resulted in lots of misinformation.

“If was strictly a training program,” wrote serial commentator John Wasserman from Windsor Terrace. “If you’ll notice, every Friday morning since July (and through August), this has-will occur.”

But no such training took place, at least last night.
