A fire in a large Bay Ridge apartment building left at least two people injured on Wednesday morning.
The blaze broke out on the third floor of a seven-story building on 3rd Avenue near 99th Street around 11 a.m., per the FDNY. When firefighters arrived in the building at 11:15 a.m., one third-floor apartment was engulfed in flames and the upper floors were filled with smoke.

“The firefighters opened the apartment door and black smoke went rolling over their heads and quickly filled the hallway,” one resident, who had escaped to the street, told Brooklyn Paper.
Dozens of tenants managed to evacuate the building, at least one toting a large dog, but many more screamed from their open windows, asking firefighters for instructions. Some sheltered in their apartments for the duration of the fire.

Some 60 firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by 12:05 p.m., according to the FDNY. Searches for trapped residents were negative, but two civilians were brought to the nearby Maimonides Medical Center emergency room. The severity of their injuries was not clear as of Wednesday afternoon.
The FDNY fire marshal will investigate the cause and origin of the blaze.
