Two more charter schools seek to open in School District 15.
The city Department of Education (DOE) has scheduled a public hearing to discuss the schools on July 29 from 6 − 7 p.m. at the District 15 office at 131 Livingston Street in room 508.
The Community Education Council (CEC) for District 15, which spans Red Hook, Park Slope and Sunset Park, received notice of the meeting on July 22, which members say isn’t enough time to inform parents about the meeting.
“I think it’s a joke to do this on one week’s notice where basically there’s no way to post these in schools, no way to get in touch with parents,” said CEC President Jim Devor. “They have no interest in public input on this.”
The DOE says public hearings must be held within 30 days of charter schools submitting their applications to open. The two schools applying to District 15 — GEE Learning Academy and GEE Excellence Academy — submitted their applications on July 1.
The DOE also sent notices about the public hearing to local elected officials and community organizations.
The charter schools are applying to open in District 15 or District 16, which covers Bedford−Stuyvesant.
Both schools seek to open in September 2010 and expand to hold 600 students in grades K−8.
