To The Editor:
I am a New York City teacher and union member. My union membership provides me with a living wage, health benefits and a pension plan. In short, the basic requirements for economic security.
Because I have this job, my family has enough to eat, we live in a comfortable apartment in a friendly neighborhood, my children will go to college, and my husband and I will not be destitute when we are elderly. And my union job provides me with the opportunity to work in an environment where my contributions, and those of my colleagues, are respected by management.
After years of diminishing union membership, the Employee Free Choice Act is a bipartisan bill that will make it easier for works to form unions.
President-elect Barack Obama has pledged support for this bill. I urge our new leaders in Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, one important step in preserving the American middle class.
