For a handful of hungry local rockers, the key to indie superstardom might be a classic, high-school-auditorium-style battle of the bands.
Starting on Nov. 6, more than 30 unsigned groups will duke it out over six nights at the Greenpoint Avenue club Red Star in the first “Brooklyn Rocks!” festival.
“These bands are all the cream of the crop of up-and-coming acts,” said promoter Lee Sobel, who organized the series, which will feature the electroclash act Jen Urban and the Box (pictured), the classic stylings of Bryce Ryness, and the raucous Sweet as Ether, among other bands.
Each band will have 40 minutes to strut its stuff during the showcase, and as many as nine acts will take the stage each night.
Performances will be all over the rock/pop/grunge/country/electronica map, so judges will score the bands based on the only quantifiable part of live music — the applause.
“It’s basically a popularity contest,” Sobel said.
