A surprising opportunity is available in School District 20.
The district’s Community Education Council (CEC) has an unexpected vacancy due to a member’s sudden resignation.
“Benjamin Ashmore has resigned for personal reasons,” CEC President Laurie Windsor explained at the council’s recent meeting. “Benjamin Ashmore was a wonderful mentor and great advocate for our schools.”
He was also the CEC’s treasurer. The CEC recently appointed current member Dina Gangemi to serve as the new treasurer.
Ashmore’s resignation leaves an open seat on the CEC.
“Feel free to get an application if you know any interested parents,” Windsor said.
Applications can be obtained by contacting the CEC’s administrative assistant at 718-759-3921.
Council spots are not open to parents currently serving on a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) or School Leadership Team.
Council members are required to attend the CEC’s monthly meetings to discuss matters affecting local schools. District 20 includes public schools in Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Fort Hamilton and Borough Park.
At meetings, CEC members can bring questions and concerns about local schools to the community superintendent. Council members also play a significant role if and when a district decides to refigure zoning lines, which determine what schools neighborhood children attend.
