Veep’s bride delivers KCC address

Lifelong educator and “deputy first lady” Dr. Jill Biden was among the notables in attendance as students marked the end of a successful scholastic year with graduation day rites and festivities at Kingsborough Community College.

Dr. Biden, the wife of Vice President Joseph Biden who has been requested by President Obama to help raise awareness about national community colleges, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the City University of New York by Kingsborough President Dr. Regina Peruggi, who also conferred associate degrees upon students in front of proud family and friends during the 44th annual commencement exercises on the college grounds, 2001 Oriental Boulevard.

The Class of 2009 valedictorian was Raluca Toscana, an immigrant success story, who graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Toscana, a native of Romania, was admitted to the college’s credit program after completing courses in Kingsborough’s English-as-a-Second-Language program.

She will continue her studies at Adelphi University towards her goal of becoming a mathematics teacher.
