Vito: Inspect the homeless

A Bay Ridge rail yard site that has become a haven for the homeless people will now be inspected weekly to clear out the area and increase safety.

Rep. Vito Fossella (R–Bay Ridge) announced on Monday that the dilapidated space under the Gowanus Expressway between 64th and 66th streets at the top of Bay Ridge will be inspected by Common Ground and the NYPD in hopes of getting the homeless men and women into shelters or treatment programs.

“This good news serves three important goals — helping the homeless get the assistance they need while protecting residents and strengthening the quality of life in Bay Ridge,” Fossella said in a press release.

The lawmaker has been lobbying the Department of Homeless Services to clean up the area since last summer, when he discovered how easy it is for people to gain access to the area, which also hosts a jet fuel pipeline that services John F. Kennedy Airport.

In addition, a homeless man died in the area in March.
