Alicia P.’s suede
breastplate is one of the many remnants of the fall fashion frenzy
that transformed New York City this week. Displayed in "Art
Refashioned," an intriguing exhibit in the gallery at Harriet’s Alter Ego clothing
boutique in Prospect Heights, this beaded, cranberry leather-and-suede
top (pictured) is not simply a sexy piece of clothing, but a
work of art.
At least that is how gallery co-owner Ngozi Odita thinks of it.
"It’s fashion week, and we wanted to do something,"
she says. "Everybody was doing fashion shows, so we thought
it would be cool to use fashion in a different way. When people
see pieces in frames and suspended from the ceiling, they are
going to look at it as art."
Just look at apparel designer Nacinimod’s crocheted boots, which
are indeed suspended from the rafters in a custom frame, or at
artist Meridith McNeal’s wedding dress made from vintage music
sheets.
Well, you get the idea.
Other artists included in "Art Refashioned" are jewelry
designer Kelley Moseley, apparel designer Cotrice, fine arts
illustrator Nathaniel McQuinn, and the gallery’s own Hekima Hapa.
Most pieces on view are wearable and will be for sale.
"Art Refashioned," runs until Oct. 6 at Harriet’s Alter
Ego’s gallery (293 Flatbush Ave. between St. Marks Avenue and
Prospect Place in Prospect Heights). For more information, call
