Need someone to blame for the cataclysmic end to the Cyclones’ 10-game winning streak last week? Blame manager Pedro Lopez.
Defying more than one century of baseball superstition, Lopez did the unthinkable with his team on a tear: he changed his contact lenses and got a haircut.
Lopez blamed the lenses themselves!
“I had an old pair of contacts that I threw out today,” Lopez said last Wednesday after the Cyclones first loss in 10 games. “After two months, you’re supposed to change them, so I did. The [end of the] winning streak had nothing to do with changing them. It was two months, and the directions said to change them, so I did.”
So maybe it was the haircut that put the kibosh on the team’s second-best winning streak ever? If so, you can blame Lopez’s wife.
“My wife told me, ‘Hey, it is time for a haircut,’ so I got one,” he said. “Again, the winning streak had nothing to do with it.”
For now, Lopez’s players are giving him (and his eyes and hair) the benefit of the doubt.
“It’s just a funny coincidence,” said outfielder Luis Rivera.
