Firefighters battling a blaze in a home on Avenue J near East 7th Street ran back into the flames to help rescue the homeowner’s best friend. The hero smoke eater from Engine Company 330 pulled the soot covered dog from the smoky blaze as the 10:30 a.m. fire raged on for ten minutes on February 3. With the frightened pooch clinging to one arm, the hero fireman brought the dog to its worried master, who couldn’t hold back the tears when her pet was in her arms. Firefighters said that the blaze started into the second floor of the three-story home. It took about forty minutes to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze was still under investigation as this paper went to press.
