The Brooklyn Indie Market brings together a couple of distinctive craft artisans working in wood, introducing a new addition to the primarily fashion and art focus of the market.
Atom of Atomesco.com and husband and wife team Alexandra and Edward of Wook Woodworking.com add their talent to the mix, August 2 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the marketplace, corner of Smith and Union streets.
Atom Cianfarani, a self-titled “Recycled Commodities Designer” and installation artist, will be showcasing such items as ‘50s inspired clocks made from a found cherry wood futon frame and fence posts, birdhouses, chairs rebuilt from reclaimed solid wood, tool boxes, magazine racks, butterfly homes and recycled bike inner tube belts into bracelets.
“Everything is made from garbage, really. Even the paints and stains are found, or claimed from free listings on Craigslist,” says Atom. “My basic premise is good design from garbage.”
You wouldn’t think of a cabinet making shop as a likely place of courtship but Alexandra and Edward of Wook Woodworking would beg to differ. While finishing their furniture design studies at Purchase, both set to work for a local cabinet-maker. They partnered in business in 2005 designing gorgeous custom cabinetry and furniture, working out of an old silk mill building in Leeds, Massachusetts.
Developing special relationships with local farmers and word of mouth lumber tips have led the couple to using materials such as reclaimed, unused and scavenged wood from nearby old family mills. Discarded cuttings from city parks and golf courses are the “found in nature” resource for their tree buttons and magnets, made from cross sections of branches. Their wares will also include benches, tables, lanterns, salad tongs and sculptural jewelry from buffalo horn.
