Snack attack
A burglar crept through the backyard of a Clinton Avenue house and made off with an unusual assortment of mundane household products from a garage overnight on Oct. 9.
The 44-year-old resident told police that the culprit took dozens of cans of tuna fish and salmon, three bottles of balsamic vinegar, three packages of sponges, boxes of crackers (for the canned fish?), three bottles of soap (to get rid of the canned fish smell?), three “jumbo packs’ of sandpaper and four jars of Grey Poupon (because anything less would be uncivilized).
The groceries and cleaners were last seen at 7 pm and were long gone by 10 am the following morning from the house between Gates and Greene avenues.
Drinking and shooting
A bandit shot a man working in a Greene Avenue liquor store during a botched robbery on Oct. 8.
The thief blasted the clerk in the arm after the worker gave the attacker $1,216 from the register of the store between Grand and Classon avenues at 11:30 pm.
The injuries could have been worse, but the wounded man dove under the counter when the intruder started firing.
The shooter escaped, but the police report said the stolen cash was recovered.
Not so easy getaway
An armed robber held up a gas station on Fulton Street on Oct. 7, but the attendant was able to record the license plate of the getaway car.
The 47-year-old employee told police that the hooligan first asked to buy a gas can at around 10:45 am, but when the worker got one from inside the filling station, the criminal brandished a handgun and demanded money. The thief fled after getting about $500, but the clerk told police he fled in a Nissan with New York license plate EFF1049.
Bank rob — or not
A Myrtle Avenue bank was targeted for two crimes last week, but neither was successful.
First, a thief attempted an old-fashioned bank robbery at around 3 pm on Oct. 6, but fled from the branch between Washington and Waverly avenues before any money changed hands.
The next day, police arrested a man who tried to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money with fake ID from the same branch.
The bank teller refused his request at 11:24 am and a security guard was able to restrain the fraudster until police arrived to make an arrest.
Above-way burg
Intruders burglarized a Flatbush Avenue sandwich shop by breaking through the eatery’s ceiling overnight on Oct. 9.
The branch between Fulton Street and Lafayette Avenue of the national chain known for its way with subs was closed from 10 pm to 8 am. When sandwich-makers showed up for the morning shift, they discovered the ceiling and roof had been damaged and told police that $2,175 was taken from the drawer.
Four score
Four hooligans mugged a woman on Gates Avenue on Oct. 8.
The victim said the at least half of the quartet attacked her simultaneously with one young man lunging for her iPod and another snaring her pocketbook at 11:30 pm near the corner of Downing Street.
Her purse contained $10 and various banking and credit cards.
Quint stint
Police captured five teenagers who tried to mug a man at the corner of Gates Avenue and Cambridge Place on Oct. 10.
The teens, all boys aged 14–16, ganged up on the 42-year-old victim at 11:23 pm. One delinquent, who had a cast on his wrist, bashed the man in the face with the inured appendage which caused bleeding and bruising around the victim’s eye.
Police patrolled the neighborhood with the injured man who was able to identify the suspects.
