The Yard’s second season on the banks of the Gowanus Canal kicks off Saturday, May 24 with a concert featuring jazzy spoken word artist Mike Ladd, as well as singer-songwriter Grey Reverend (pictured) and Bushwick’s No Surrender, an electronic dance group. Upcoming events include more live music, barbecues, dance parties and family activities.
“[Experience Brooklyn] in a totally different way than you normally [would], sitting on a picnic table watching a band, not fighting for space packed into a room,” said Jen Lyon, one of the venue’s owners. “It’s a no-pressure situation.”
Some highlights from last year, which Lyon said will return this summer, were “Sabbath in the Park,” a day of Black Sabbath music — a chance for Boomers to put on “band T-shirts that they haven’t worn since high school” — and a “Harvest Fest,” replete with hay rides and live chickens, that drew a crowd of 1,000.
“[We] try to bring in as many different kinds of people as [we] can,” Lyon said.
Events at The Yard (388-400 Carroll St. at Bond Street in Gowanus) begins at 4 pm on May 24 and run through October. Cover charges vary; admission on May 24 is $15. For more information, visit www.theyard.ws.
