The Brooklyn Paper

Park Slope: Former Brooklyn Paper reporter Patrick Gallahue swears he isn’t running for public office — but over a few beers at Bar Toto this week, he volunteered that if he did run for office, his entire platform would consist of rescinding a city law that requires bodegas to put single bottles of beer in small paper bags. “We’re supposedly such a green city, but yet we require sealed beers to be sold with a paper bag,” Gallahue said. “I say, ‘Enough!’” …

Bay Ridge: Our friends at Lutheran Medical Center are celebrating their 125th anniversary by honoring every 125th baby born in their clinics. This week, new moms Sleem Ismahum, Jessical Liang, Li Mei Rong and Maria Ibarra-James got gift baskets from Babies R Us and the chance to win a $1,2500 savings bond. …

Cobble Hill: The Brooklyn New School on Henry Street just got a $3,000 “Parents as Arts Partners” grant from the Center for Arts Education. That’ll pay for a lot of art supplies. …

Brooklyn Bridge Realty

Clinton Hill: Our rivals at U.S. News & World Report just named Pratt Institute’s Interior Design department the best in the country in the magazine’s annual guide to America’s best grad schools. The institute’s industrial design department ranked fourth-best, too. Way to go, Pratt. …

Brooklyn Heights: The woman behind Bargemusic, Olga Bloom, has been inducted into the New York City Hall of Fame. Sure, the Hall is Queens-based, but there’s no more worthy Brooklynite than Olga, who started Bargemusic at the foot of Old Fulton Street in 1976. …

DUMBO: Our friends at the General Store say they love all the new business they’re getting from the neighborhood’s fancy new residents, but they don’t love the low tips. Come on, people; if you can afford a million-dollar condo, you can afford to leave some change in the jar! …

Our pal Dan Power — the man and the name behind PowerHouse Books and the PowerHouse Arena — is trading spaces at his DUMBO book publishing house. Longtime partner Craig Cohen will take over book publishing, while Power will focus on business, promoting, marketing and encouraging retail at the Arena, which is at 37 Main St. on the corner of Water Street. …

Our pals on the cast and crew of “The Taking of Pelham 123” dropped by DUMBO this week to film scenes for their blockbuster remake. The movie, which stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta, tells that old story of a group of crooks that hijacks a subway train — a dream common among DUMBO residents who are sick of F-train service changes.
