The ‘5th’ dimension! Avenue to become music central later this month

Twice this month, Park Slope’s portion of Fifth Avenue will become a sprawling, open-air music festival.

From Dean Street to 18th Street on Oct. 22 and 29, musicians will perform New Orleans jazz, classical music, folk and, in one case, the Balkan flute. The 32 performers, including Hasan Bakr (pictured), will be spaced far enough apart so that the chamber music doesn’t become world music, or vice-versa.

The night of street music is one of a growing list of conferences, readings, concerts and other events put on by the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, which is hoping to give a boost to the local Mom and Pop stores.

The better news is that the music will actually be good, said Irene LoRe, executive director of the BID. The musicians are faculty members of the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, which is, dare we say it, based on Seventh Avenue.

“These are accomplished musicians,” said LoRe. “It won’t be like a bad karaoke night where you have to order a drink to dull the sound of the music.”

This event sounds great, just like the summer craft fair turned out. I applaud the 5th avenue BID for organizing neighborhood events like this that limit vehicle traffic, and cater to the overwhelming pedestrian quality of the area. I do find it ironic though that the BID had opposed the 5th avenue bike lane, which very similarly caters to a pedestrian neighborhood scale, and whose only effect on vehicular traffic is to calm it. It seems like a double standard to say these street fair type events do wonders for local businesses, but the bike lanes destroy shop keepers by limiting car access (which isn't true at all). Thoughts?

We just came back from a walk on 5th Ave and accidentally discovered the music.

Too bad this didn't get more promotion. Great music...great musicians, but very few people out there enjoying it.

Furthermore, there's no poster/sign that explains what it's all about.

Great idea, too bad it wasn't better thought out.
