More vandalism against gas guzzlers on PPW!

for The Brooklyn Paper

Four more gas guzzlers were vandalized on Prospect Park West early this morning, the second attack against big cars in as many days.

Yesterday, we reported that eight minivans and SUVs had their windows smashed in a violent spree between First and 12th streets.

But on Thursday, residents awoke to discover that they had been victimized in a second night of broken glass, this time near Fifth Street.

“We’ve never seen vandalism like this,” said Michelle Gonzalez, whose van was a victim of the serial smashers two nights in a row. “Now I’m too afraid to park my car on the street. What’s the point of destroying somebody’s property?”

Other victims discovered the broken glass as they were rushing to work.

“Now I have to pay for this,” said Mitch Delhoyo, who stared through a gaping hole in the back of his sport utility vehicle. “This is not common in this neighborhood.”

Curiously, only minivans and sport utility vehicles appeared to be targets — which led many Park Slopers to speculate on a more complicated modus operandi.

“They’re targeting a particular section of society,” said resident Jana Bruns.

Another resident couldn’t believe her eyes.

“This makes me a little nervous,” said Cindy Ferrara. “It’s like political statement.”

A neighborhood glass repairman also confirmed the vandals’ prejudice.

“They are targeting minivans more,” said Joe Guerrieri, who has repaired at least 18 vehicles since yesterday.

He added that the marauders probably used a pellet gun to shoot out the glass, judging by the bb-sized holes in many windows that came through his shop.

The damage to the large automobiles could range from $180 to nearly $500.

Its pointless vandalism. We've set up cameras in a few areas. Hopefully we'll get them tonight

Since bicycles were not vandalized, I guess you won't call it TERRORISM … but it DOES appear to be just that, eco-terrorism.

Any idea what it costs to replace an SUV window? (A lot more than one of those cheap pre-owned bikes a lot of Slopers ride.)

Every bike advocate's a suspect! Round 'em all up!

(Humph.)

thats so stupid its gotta be the darn bike lane idiots. funny that this started happening after the grand army plaza protest..... be on the look out for an idiot on a bike with a bb gun... not to mention that some one couldve been in their car at the time of these shootings and we wouldve had an entirely different kind of crime

My car was vandalized also. It was parked on PPW between 4th and 5th. A neighbor called to say that the rear window of my Honda CRV (not exactly a gas guzzler, although not on a par with the Prius) had been smashed. I don't think it's included in any of the counts yet although I did call it in to the 78.

My Prius was vandalized last week on 5th street. Two tires were punctured. How would you explain that?

Bob Scott from Brooklyn says:
There's a sense of lawlessness in Park Slope. It starts with the filthy streets and all those flyers illegally taped to lampposts, mailboxes, and newsboxes.

First they threw litter on the ground, then they taped litter to the lampposts, then they allowed bicyclists to roam wild, next car windows are smashed, and tomorrow… Wait and see.

Dave from Park Slope says:
You forgot "then they let 75% of the cars on PPW break the law by exceeding the speed limit" between lampposts and bikes. And yeah, we were firing up the crowd at the rally by imploring them to go out and break car windows.

More likely, the same illiterate fool who scrawled "bike lane is dum" on the path a few weeks ago is the responsible party. Or some poor, tortured soul who can't accept that the redesign of PPW is here to stay.

Thanks for playing... bubbye!

mamaza from prospect heights says:
IT's not bikers and its not terrorism against SUV drivers.
On Wed, in Prospect Heights, we had 6 vehicles on our block with smashed windows and most of them were not SUVS.
Cops said these were done in a drive by shooting with pellet guns on 9 blocks over that night. Sounds more gang related.
crazy stuff.

Makes me glad I left the city years ago. Tired of fighting for parking and my car getting vandalized. I never even lock the car and sometimes forget to lock the doors of my house. It's quite and I sleep with the windows open both upstairs and down. Lots I miss bout the city, and the commute sucks, but parking, vandalism & noise are no-more

That bike lane is pure evil. I bet the green asphalt jumped up in the night and smashed all those SUV windows itself.

Oh, wait, what? Cops said people in cars did it? I don't believe it. The cops are clearly part of the bike lane conspiracy now.

Nathan H from Downtown Brooklyn says:
This is clearly the work of Yemen. Park Slope minivans were fine until terrorists packed explosive material into toner cartridges destined for the US last week. Coincidence? Don't be naive. They are sick of the billions of euros that Americans driving comically oversized vehicles foist upon their region each year, usurping their pre-modern culture's religious values with materialism, so they're attacking the source of the problem with pellet guns.

That or it is some teenagers, and you're seeing more damage to vehicles surrounded by glass windows that are perpendicular to the ground because those would be the easiest to hit directly.

there is a sense of political disempowerment that leads to this type of action.

let's catch the people doing this, but also lets figure out how to engage those feel they have no voice, except to turn to emotional action.

I'm happy about this. Learn how to take the subway!

Or get a better car that isn't as harmful to the environment. Or just don't drive. Good? Cool.

Or we'll get ya again!

Angel Emerald from Park Slope says:
I don't approve of the vandalism but I will say the SUV and Mini Van drivers are horrible and quite disrespectful. While they aren't the only ones double parking and making U-turns on 7th and 6th Avenues, they are the most frequent offenders along with the car service drivers. It's like the Police don't know how to patrol what they think is a good neighborhood. A little Police presence, including tickets and arrests, will get this neighborhood back to one where we respect each other and obey the laws to increase a positive sense of community.

Yea Jonathan that subway is very handy for getting to my place upstate. Its also great when I need to move furniture or take my three dogs over to visit the relatives in NJ. Thanks for the recommendation from a person who can't see beyond the monomaniac spectacles at the end of his nose.
